Underneath the Sparkle & Confetti - The Designer's Depression

Underneath the Sparkle & Confetti - The Designer's Depression

She left "a little sparkle" everywhere she went, and on June 5th, 2018, she left behind a suicide note as well.

To know Kate Spade, and the brand itself, was to know bright colors, uplifting quotes, and happy patterns. Vibrant, bold, positive, and optimistic. Just to walk into one of her stores is like entering into another world, where black and white is somehow made happy with stripes and polka dots.

You know the quote "you can't judge a book by its cover"?

Of course you do.

And this quote, as cliche as it may seem, is the perfect lesson we see in the passing of American designer, and multi-millionaire, Kate Spade.

From the outside looking in, you saw a successful, rich, bold, happy mother and wife. And on the inside, underneath the sparkle and confetti, was a suicidal, broken, hurting woman, who was not living in happy patterns and polka dots, but rather heart-wrenching pain.

I think we get caught up in the American dream. The one where you educate yourself, get married, and then get rich. Kate Spade was a mother, wife, and the founder of one of the biggest fashion empires the world will ever see.

Her death was unexpected and caught everyone off guard. No one saw the signs, or the cries for help in her hurting marriage and broken identity.

I have three points I want you to take away from this blog post:

1) We never know what someone else is going through, no matter what they look like from the outside.

2) Money, success, and temporary, materialistic things WILL NEVER GIVE YOU SUSTAINING HAPPINESS. Your worth comes in your Eternal Father in Heaven who deemed you priceless 2,000 years ago on the cross.

3) You are so worthy.

Worthy of all the sparkles and confetti in the world. It's okay if you're hurting.

It's okay not to be okay.

It's okay to have every earthly thing you could ever desire, yes, even a fashion empire, and not be truly happy.

Because the truth is, no matter how many treasures you have here on this earth, the only thing that will ever satisfy you is the worth you find in Jesus Christ.

Underneath the sparkles and confetti, Kate Spade was just another human being who was struggling with her mental well being. Depression and anxiety, it's no joke.

MONEY CANNOT BUY HAPPINESS. SUCCESS DOES NOT AND NEVER WILL SUSTAIN YOU. DEPRESSION DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE.

I look at it this way;

Physical health: Broken arm? You go to the doctor to get it fixed...

Mental health: Hurting mind? You go to the doctor to seek help!!

High price tag or not, multi millionaire or the poorest- it doesn't matter, people hurt.

If you, or absolutely anyone you know is hurting, struggling with depression, anxiety, or any other mental illness: SEEK HELP.

You are so incredibly worthy of life! Kate's ended far too soon.
